Renault Could Kill The Alpine A110 After Just Three Years

The company is looking to cut costs.

Renault, like many automakers right now, are looking to cut costs to survive the coronavirus pandemic. The French automaker, part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, is preparing to unveil a cost-cutting plan that, according to a new report from Automotive News Europe, calls for the closing of several factories. One of those possible closures is Renault’s Dieppe, France, plant where it builds the limited-production Alpine A110 sports car.

This could put the A110 out to pasture just three years after its introduction at the 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed. The factory employs about 400 people, according to the publication, and it’s one of the company’s smallest factories in the alliance. The report doesn’t say if Renault plans to move A110 production out of Dieppe, though in September 2018, the company had a 14-month waiting period for the new car, at the

Mexico’s president revs up car industry, and wider economy

MEXICO CITY, May 13 (Reuters) – President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador will lay out a roadmap on Wednesday for Mexico to re-open its economy, with a focus on the automotive sector whose supply chains are closely interwoven with U.S. carmakers.

The U.S. government and automotive companies have called on Mexico to reopen factories serving the U.S. market, despite the Latin American nation still dealing with a rising number of infections from the coronavirus pandemic. Mexico on Tuesday registered 353 coronavirus deaths in its most lethal day yet.

Mexico sends 80% of its exports to the U.S. and became the United States’ biggest trade partner last year, with bilateral commerce worth over $600 billion.

Acura RLX Sedan Dead In North America After 2020 Model Year

It looks like time as run out for the Acura RLX, at least in North America. Automotive News reports that the luxury sedan is being axed from Acura’s lineup after the 2020 model year. It won’t completely disappear from existence however, as it will continue to be sold in other markets under the Honda brand where it’s called the Legend.

The news broke through a communication from Honda to its dealership network in North America. A representative reportedly told Automotive News that the company’s RDX and MDX SUVs are now the volume sellers for North American buyers, and that’s absolutely true when looking at Acura sales figures for 2019. The RDX was Acura’s best-selling vehicle last year with 62,876 units sold. Combined, RDX and MDX racked up nearly 115,000 sales.
